[ARCHIVED] Prisma Health Welcome Center Features work of Greenville Artist

Art at the Prisma Health Welcome Center

The art of Greenville’s April W. Harrison is on display at the Unity Park Prisma Health Welcome Center Public Art Gallery through mid-August.

The self-taught artist uses collage (sticking materials like photographs, scraps of paper or fabric to a backing) along with color in an ode to her grandmothers, whose homemade quilts “evoke a feeling of comfort, love, caring and family.”

Harrison’s work often features elongated arms and oversized hands, all intended to bring attention to the need for human touch. Quite often, eyes are closed in homage to a passage from the Bible that says, “we walk by faith, not by sight.”

Harrison’s is the first of several displays to be rotated through the gallery that is meant to honor Greenville’s history by showcasing the work of hand-selected local artists.

Her work has been featured at the Greenville County Museum of Art, the Morris Museum of Art in Georgia, Hampton University Museum in Virginia, and Spartanburg County Museum of Art.
