The July 4 holiday, synonymous with municipal and private fireworks displays, is just a few days away. In line with recommendations from the Greenville Fire Department, the Greenville Police Department would like to welcome the general public to enjoy the free fireworks show at the Wells Fargo Red, White and Blue Festival in downtown Greenville, rather than using consumer fireworks.
Beginning at 5 p.m., there will be live music on two stages and other activities for families to enjoy. At approximately 9:45 p.m., the Fireworks Launch will begin, with the best viewing spot on Main Street between Court Street and Falls Park Drive.
According to the National Fire Prevention Association, personal firework usage can come with high risks, as they reported an estimated 11,900 fireworks-related injuries in 2015, with more than a quarter of those occurring to children younger than 15 years of age.
Fireworks also account for 18,500 fires a year, including 1,300 structure fires and 300 vehicle fires.
For those who use consumer fireworks, the City of Greenville recommends the following precautions:
- Check with local officials if you’re unsure whether it’s legal to use fireworks where you live
- Only buy fireworks from retailers permitted through the Fire Marshal’s Office
- Store fireworks in a cool, dry place
- Always have an adult present when shooting fireworks
- Use common sense and always read and follow the directions on each firework
- Never point or throw fireworks at another person
- Only use fireworks outdoors, away from homes, dry grass and trees
- Light one firework at a time and keep a safe distance
- Never experiment or attempt to make your own fireworks
- Never give fireworks to small children
- Never carry fireworks in your pocket
- Never shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers
- Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse
- Never re-ignite malfunctioning fireworks
- Put used fireworks in a bucket of water and keep a garden hose on hand
