[ARCHIVED] 7/28/2017 - Village of West Greenville to Feature New Public Plaza

The Village of West Greenville will soon have a new public plaza. Located between The Anchorage and Community Journals, the plaza will meet the area’s growing need for a large outdoor gathering space. According to Tracy Ramseur, the City’s development coordinator, the Village’s need for such a space is driven in large part by the community-minded entrepreneurs opening new businesses in the area. “The Village of West Greenville is fortunate to have an eclectic mix of small businesses, ranging from artist studios to restaurants, as well as a very active business association,” said Ramseur. “They host a variety of free community events, like VILLive concerts and monthly First Fridays, that bring hundreds of people to the Village’s epicenter and the new plaza will serve as the ideal backdrop for those special events.” Ramseur also noted that much like the City’s other acclaimed outdoor spaces, the new plaza’s thoughtful design and features will create an inviting space for daily activities, as well as improve the area’s walkability.

Construction on the plaza began in mid-July and will conclude in October. Once complete, the roughly 5,000-square-foot plaza will feature raised planters, catenary lights strung from rooftop to rooftop, one-of-a-kind cast-iron light poles donated by local businessman and community leader Richard Heusel and public art as a nod to the area’s thriving arts scene. The Greater Greenville Association of Realtors also awarded the City a $3,000 Placemaking Micro-Grant to fund a large artistic “Village of West Greenville” sign for the plaza. According to the National Association of Realtors, the Placemaking Micro-grant is available to state and local REALTOR® Associations to help fund small projects that create community gathering places; attract residents and visitors; bring life to downtowns; support walkable communities and preserve open and green spaces.
